Storport Driver

On a Dell server running Microsoft Windows Server  2003 and Dell RAID with the latest Dell updates you may see a warning about: Driver version is out of date.

Storport Driver Version 5.2.3790.4021

Minimum Required Storport Driver Version 5.2.3790.4173

This warning is dues to the Microsoft StorPort driver not the Dell driver. If you search for the latest Microsoft StorPort driver you are likely to find the version 5.2.3790.4021. Finding a version 5.2.3790.4173 or newer is far more difficult. There are a couple different hot fixes available with newer versions of the StorePort.sys driver

This is the latest version I could find:  I hope this saves someone time. Make sure you select the correct platform. The KB page will only show the download for the platform it thinks best matches the machine you are on. Show all for additional downloads.

What is a StorPort Driver. What is the advantage of the StorPort driver versus the SCSIport Driver.

This information applies to the following Operating System s :

In addition to the SCSIport driver, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and later versions provide Storport, a storage port driver that is especially suitable for use with high-performance buses, such as fibre channel buses, and RAID adapters.

There are several advantages to using Storport rather than the SCSIport driver:

Improved performance, both in terms of throughput and the system resources that are utilized. The Storport driver should also perform on a par with, or better than, a monolithic port driver. Improved miniport interface that addresses the needs of high-end storage vendors, particularly host-based RAID and fibre channel vendors.

All vendors are encouraged to use Storport where possible, rather than the SCSIport driver. Certain restrictions apply, however. Storport cannot be used with adapters or devices that do not support Plug and Play. All DMA devices must have bus-mastering DMA capability, since Storport does not support programmed I/O or slave-mode DMA. Other restrictions apply in regard to tagged queuing, autorequest sense, WMI support, the sort of SCSI inquiry data that devices must report, and booting directly from an adapter s ROM BIOS. For a detailed list of restrictions on the use of the Storport driver, see Requirements for Using Storport with an Adapter below.

To better utilize the investment that vendors have made in SCSIport miniport drivers, Storport follows the SCSIport-miniport driver architecture with very few modifications. Changes to the SCSIport driver interface were made in areas where new algorithms were able to produce measurable speed increases, or where it was necessary to add support for high-speed buses.

Requirements for Using Storport with an Adapter:

In order to improve performance and enhance stability, Storport does not provide support for certain kinds of devices mostly older devices with limited feature sets. In addition to degrading performance, support for these devices complicates the port driver, slowing down miniport driver development and testing.

The following list details the features that devices, adapters, and miniport drivers must all support, in order to function with Storport:

Bus-mastering DMA. Storport does not support either programmed I/O or slave-mode DMA.

Scatter/gather I/O. Miniport drivers must support at least 16 physical breaks in their scatter/gather list implementation. Miniport drivers that work with Storport should be able to support up to 255 physical breaks in the same manner as SCSI Port miniport drivers.

Bus-width DMA. Storport will not copy memory to perform data transfers. An adapter that runs on a machine that can address more than 32 bits of address space must support 64-bit addressing. For example, an adapter that runs on an IA-32 machine that has Pentium address extensions PAE must support full 64-bit addressing.

SCSI tagged queuing. The Storport driver will issue up to 254 requests per logical unit. SCSI Port miniport drivers that make use of the fact that SCSI Port never issued more than 254 requests per adapter must be modified to accept a much larger number of requests.

SCSI autorequest sense. Disabling is not supported.

Support for larger sense buffers. Miniport drivers that work with Storport must not be designed with fixed-size sense buffers in view. Miniport drivers must use the size passed in the SRB SCSI_Request_Block.

Plug and Play. Because miniport drivers that work with Storport must be enabled for Plug and Play, the port driver takes care of all shared resource acquisition and management.

Multi-Tier Resets. Adapters must support tiered resets. When possible, the Storport driver and related higher-level drivers attempt to reset the logical unit. If this fails, Storport attempts to reset the device. Finally, if this approach also fails, Storport resets the bus. This sequence generates significantly fewer bus-reset operations.

RAID Adapters that expose virtual logical units are required to support SCSI Inquiry Vital Product Data pages 00h, 80h, and 83h. For example, a host-based RAID adapter must respond to a SCSI Inquiry command with Vital Product Data Page set to 01h for the following pages: 0 supported vital product data pages, 80h unit serial number page, and 83h device identification page. These commands can be handled either by the adapter s firmware or synthesized in the miniport.
